Your roof is one of the essential components of a safe and structurally sound home. In Canada, we experience incredibly harsh elements that can damage the roof of a house, repairs, therefore, are quite common. Still, regular roof check-ups and inspections are often forgotten about, leading to worsening roofing issues.
Sometimes a problem can be visible, making it easy for the homeowner to identify it and call a roofing professional immediately. Conversely, and more frequently, roofing problems are found by other symptoms the problems it causes. These can include internal leaks, mold, and others.
Depending on how long the issue has been present for and the type of weather and amount of moisture which has built up since the problem occurred, be relative to the amount of work required to fix it.
I Have a Roofing Problem, What Do I Do?

How Do I Know If I Need a Roof Repair of Replacement?
Often, a roof in need of substantial repairs is clearly identifiable. These indicators are the shingles pitting, cracking, and general shingle deterioration. If this is the case, a roof replacement might be the best option for you.
Sometimes, you can see shingles out of place or alignment or even missing shingles, if this is the case, feel free to call us at Highpoint Roofing and Eavestrough immediately for a complimentary roof inspection and estimate.
Although general shingle damage and deterioration are typical over the lifetime of a roof, improper roof installation is a far more common reason. The excellent news is roof repairs are typically affordable and help to improve the lifetime of the roofing system.
Why Haven’t My Shingles Lasted As Long As They Should Have?
I would be lying if I said this wasn’t a common question from homeowners. The answer is there are several potential causes, but some of the most common are listed below.
1 – Not following manufacturers Guidelines
One of the most common causes of roof deterioration and issues is from the roofing contractor not following the manufacturer’s guidelines on how to properly install that particular shingle manufacturer’s instructions.
Yes, manufacturers create complete guidelines on how to install their shingles. These guidelines include instructions like how many nails per shingle, what type of underlayment to use and more. Unfortunately, many roofing contractors don’t follow these guidelines because they’re trying to save a couple of bucks leading to an increase in the profit margin of the job. Now, there’s nothing wrong with making a profit, but when that profit is at the expense of the job completion quality, that’s when we see a big problem.
At Highpoint Roofing and Eavestrough, not only do we follow manufacturers’ guidelines, we are certified by a number of the top manufacturers to install their specific roofing systems. Following these guidelines often allows us to offer enhanced warranty coverage on a number of our shingle choices.
2 – Lack of regular maintenance and inspections
Although a significant and pervasive problem, this one is relatively easy to fix. Get your roof checked annually for issues and potential concerns. I can’t recommend this enough, as many of the typical roofing problems many homeowners face could are entirely avoidable by a simple annual roof inspection and regular maintenance.
3 -Poor Installation and workmanship
This issue may seem similar to the first, but it is entirely different. Not following manufacturers’ guidelines is a problem, but general poor workmanship and shoddy Installation is an altogether different story.
The problem of poor Installation and workmanship is the primary reason we tell our clients – “Do your due diligence before hiring a roofing contractor.” Why? Unfortunately, the roofing industry in Ontario is entirely unregulated, meaning you could rent a half-ton trailer, get some business cards made up, and call yourself the best roofing company in the area.
Not only does this mean there are hundreds of less than reputable roofing companies out there, but these people claiming they’re roofing professionals often don’t know the first thing about roofing.
I don’t say this to scare you, I mean for it to help you understand the importance of choosing a qualified, reputable roofing company.
Do You Need Roof Repair Assistance?
Sometimes it can be hard to know whether or not roof repairs are needed, especially if not inspected by a trained roofing professional. The elements from the winter months can cause several insidious problems, especially in our harsh Canadian climate.
The answer, though, is simple. Call a trained roofing professional to inspect the roof and see if, when, and where repairs are needed.
